Sony A6000, Nature + Portraits

Over the weekend, I ran out in the rain to pick up my new go with me everywhere camera.  I picked the brain of a fellow photographer that I knew had recently picked it up and while it does take some getting use to.  I absolutely love it.

Yesterday while I was out letting Bella roam a little further out than normal, I captured a couple of these.  I am so happy that I am finally getting the chance to use a camera more.  I love my Mark 5D III but it scares the shit out of me to just walk around with it, especially for weekend outings or randomness.  But I love photography I love being able to document things and I am happy that I can finally get the chance to.

I posted the below image yesterday on instagram right after I took it because the Sony A6000 has built in wi-fi so I was able to send the photo to my phone and directly to instagram.  You should definitely go check it out, and maybe give it a like or love.

Paint, Soccer, + Pizza.

In a world where cupcakes can heal all wounds; is a world where I'd like to exist.

This weekend so much happened, my bestie came into town and that was exciting in itself.  We attended a graduation, ate at our favorite indian restaurant, got our favorite cupcakes, hung out at a wine bar, saw old co-workers, painted pottery, went shopping at the Target [duh!] and then she left me.  [insert very sad face emoji]

The worst part is that the weather in Houston as it usually does, made it impossible for us to get in a shoot before she left.  Wahh and I had another scheduled that we rescheduled only to find out that it didn't rain during our scheduled time, double wah!!

Sunday, I took my niece and nephew to the Dynamo game and just as much as I figured I had no clue what was going on, I had no clue what was going on.  I don't do sports, I don't mind them being on the television but I don't really care much for the games.  But I figured it was a good opportunity to take out my new A6000.  So I got a few pictures, my phone also decided to tell me that I ran out of photo memory.  Anyone else starting to hate their iPhone?

I didn't get to play with my make up much over the weekend so I don't really have anything to report in that area.  I will leave you with a couple of images from my weekend.

Monday Mash Up

First off, I want to say Happy Mother's day to all of the lovely moms out there, a day isn't enough to celebrate all that you do!

Secondly, this weekend as all other weekends seem to be so short that I am racing out of work during the week or trying to get in some extra time.  I am literally wearing Nike Yoga pants to work.  Who am I?

In my defense, the lights were out when I started getting ready then as soon as I was going to get dressed they came on and it was too late I had already committed.

I am hoping today I can run into Target to get some pants and a pair of flats for work.  Then get out of there in enough time to see what we are making for dinner.

Here are a couple of photos to recap my weekend, how was yours?

Chantelle Davis - Gray | Small Business Feature

I am so glad that I was able to interview Chantelle for my monthly small business feature because a lot of what she does hits very close to home for me, and I hoped that it would be very helpful for some of the lovely ladies that read my blog to hear about and maybe use to as well.  She helps women take care of themselves to live better and who doesn't want to live better!

So ladies, without further hesitation I want to introduce to you Chantelle Davis - Gray.

What made you start your business?
The catalyst was a few years ago when a family member had a big health scare.  I realized that I didn't want to waste any more time letting the stress of my job hurt my health.  I wanted to have energy and feel good in my body.  When I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the next phase in my career, I kept coming back to nutrition and wellness.  I wanted to help other people feel better in their lives.  It really is what they say: listen to what keeps calling you.  I followed my interest - the things I read about online when I was supposed to be doing other things - and, after a lot of consideration, I decided to go back to school to become a health + lifestyle coach.

What would you define as your greatest success thus far within your business?
It has been amazing to help my clients have "a-ha" moments regarding their health or happiness.  One client had been struggling with a lot of inflammation and painful joints, and she discovered that when she stopped letting her creative deadlines takes over her day [ie. forgetting to eat or drink until 3pm], and started nourishing her body, it made a huge difference in reducing the pain.  At a workshop, another woman realized that she was having sugar cravings at night because she wasn't having any joy during the day - the sweets were the only thing making her smile - by adding some fun back to her life, her cravings lessened.  Each client has their own path to go down, and I am honored to join them as a support system.

Any advice you have to offer young girls or women?
Find activities and people that nourish you! Stay curious until you find them. We are fed by more than just the food on our plates, and in order to feel truly full in or lives, we need all of it.  We need supportive friendships and joyful movement [ie. exercising in a fun way], just as much as getting enough protein.  You need to find ways to relax, because if you're always in super-stressed mode, you will never feel like cooking dinner, so you get takeout every night.  When you're getting enough sleep, you're more likely to go for a walk after work.  In countless ways, mind and body health are connected and dependent on each other, so you need to care for both.

Is there anything you want clients to know about working with you?
I work with busy women via video-chat or phone, so location doesn't matter - some do it on lunch break at work, others do it from home - it's more flexible to not have to drive to the appointment.  I tailor my coaching to each individual, so there's no formula or template for the information and guidance I share - it all depends on what my client needs and wants.  I'm a compassionate, candid coach!  I don't pretend to eat kale 24-7, I'm realistic and practical with my guidance, and that includes no counting calories.  I'm a big believer in progress, not perfection, because to be sustainable, it's the little things that add up.

Weekend Dress | Puppies | A Cute Girl

This past weekend I was so looking forward to getting a ton of outfit post together for the next month for you guys but that just didn't happen.

My niece was hanging out with us and as soon as I brought my camera out, she was like "OOOoo, Can I try?".  I find it very cool when my niece or nephew wants to hold a camera in their hands so I'm always up for it.  Of course, right after I give them the lecture of how important it is to not drop this camera, and how it is a life or death situation.

E was able to get a few shots in prior to us wrapping the camera strap tightly around her.  After that she started to tell me how I should pose.  Yup, you heard right.  She told me how I should pose. LOL.

The dress is from Forever 21, it is really comfortable and the perfect dress for the weekend.  I am not sure you are like me and weekends are pretty much for running errands and getting to everything I can't during the week which is pretty much everything.

So throwing on a dress and running out of the house is the best thing ever, especially on the weekend.

// Dress: Forever 21 // Sandals: Old Navy //

I wasn't sure how the photos were going to turn out so I decided to leave the little make up I had on for the day alone and just see how the first + only outfit went.  We had some blurry images but some of them worked out.

These are the poses that a soon to be 9 year old taught me. Don't try to steal them.

Oh and in case you missed her on my social media accounts, this is Bella our new little pit baby.

Damsel in Designer | Styled Photo Shoot

If you follow me on any of my other social media platforms you know that last month was a pretty good month for my photography.  I was able to get a styled shoot that I did with my hair stylist The Orlando Salon featured on two different blogs, you can see them here and here

I was so happy to be part of this shoot and I am in love with how the final images turned out.  I was a nervous wreck going into the shoot as I am during almost every shoot, wedding, etc.  I am very happy for the help of Mr. Danny Nguyen for his direction and help during the shoot.

But ladies, I have to get a little mushy with all of this not because I want to but because I feel like I need to.  There has always been a lot of self doubt intertwined into my life that has held me back a lot, I feel like some have even taken advantage of it but this year I decided that I was no longer going to hold myself back nor allow others to do the same.

This year I decided was going to be the year of accomplishments and breakthroughs and I have set myself up with others in the same mindset.  Surround yourself with better people, people who believe in others, themselves, and are positive.  You have every ability that successful people have and you have the ability to make all of your dreams come true, big or small.

I believe in you.

Taryn Melgoza Photography | Local Small Business Feature

It is that time again for our Monthly Small Business Feature, this month it is a local feature with another photographer that I have known for a few years now.  She is pretty AHmazing, she is a Newborn + Maternity Photographer, wife, and mother to two little cuties.

I haven't had the opportunity to meet Taryn in person but we are part of a small local photography group on facebook and I have had the lovely opportunity to watch her photography and family grow.

If you ever ask me who you should go to for Newborn Photography hands down I will direct you to the lovely Mrs. Taryn, she handles your session with the utmost care and if you don't believe me just check out her behind-the-scenes video at the end.

So without further adieu, I present to you Taryn of Taryn Melgoza Photography

HI THERE!
I'M TARYN

I am a maternity, newborn and family photographer located in Houston, TX.  I am married to my high school sweetheart and we have two awesome child who light up our lives and always keep us laughing.  I started my photography journey in 2009 when my husband bought me my very first DSLR camera for our one year wedding anniversary.

This gift kick-started an obsession for me that would eventually grow into a successful portrait studio a few years later.  I am a lover of cupcakes and coffee, my two dogs, college football and all things maroon.  Gig 'em!

Taryn Melgoza Photography | Local Small Business Feature

Why did you choose to do newborn and maternity photography?

I spent the first few year of business photographing EVERYTHING: weddings, events, pets, products...really just trying to get a feel for this industry and figure out what I was doing.  As most have probably experienced, any type of business is good business when you are just starting out.

But over time, I started to feel more drawn to newborn and baby photography.  I love being able to capture such a fleeting moment in a new baby's life; they are only that little, that squishy and that sleepy for the first few weeks after birth.

I also love incorporating different textures, muted colors and layers, to create a beautiful yet timeless memory of each precious miracle.  Each session I challenge myself to create something new and original using the props and fabrics that I have in my studio.  Once I started to focus more on newborn portraits, maternity photography was the next natural progression as many families choose to document their bumps before their newborn sessions.

Pregnancy is such an exciting yet sweet time, and I focus on capturing the emotion, connection, and anticipation in the arrival of a new life.

If you could educate clients on one thing what would it be?

My focus for this business is to create an amazing and memorable full-service portrait experience for my clients.  And my hope is for each family to walk away with more than just digital images, I want them to leave with beautiful and tangible art pieces that they can cherish and display in their homes.  Your memories are meant to decorate your walls, not to sit inside your computer desk gather dust, soon to be forgotten.

Taryn Melgoza Photography | Local Small Business Feature

Many past clients of mine have commented that they intended to print their images from their digital files, but life got busy and they never got around to it.  This is heart-breaking to me and something I am working to address in my business by making sure each and every client leave with something tangible from their session.

Your images are meant to be admired and cherished for all to see, so I encourage everyone to make printing your images a priority!  It's also important to note that having professional and beautiful portraits taken of your new baby is an investment that is worth saving for and making a priority.  Of all the numerous baby items parent's use during their first few years of a baby's life [crib, glider, swing, car-seat], the newborn portraits are the only possessions that will actually last a lifetime.

What are you most proud of in your photography career?

When I left my teaching job to pursue photography full time, I was so scared!  I had no business experience (I was an engineering major in college), I was a brand new mom, and I was leaving a stable income behind to follow my dream.

I knew I loved photographing babies and families and wanted to be able to focus more on learning more about photography and growing my small business. I also knew I wanted to be able to help provide for my family while also being home with my children more during their baby years.

Fast forward to today…since leaving my teaching job in 2012 my business has grown tremendously, my work has improved drastically, and I have learned so much about the industry!  I am most proud to be able to do what I LOVE every day and feel confident that I made the right decision to leave my teaching job behind.

Taryn Melgoza Photography | Local Small Business Feature

By working for myself I have been able to set my own hours and I am still able to be home with my children most of the time.  Some days are tough and I admit that I do struggle to find a balance occasionally especially during the busy fall months (just keeping it real for you!) but I know I am so blessed to be on this path and following God's plan for my life.  Snuggling newborn babies every week is truly a dream come true!

How has photography changed your life?

It has given me a confidence I didn’t know was possible.

Being a business owner can be tough with so many responsibilities, roles, and stress… but I can say with certainty that I grow stronger with each new challenge that I face!

Taryn Melgoza Photography | Local Small Business Feature

Photography has made me cherish moments with loved ones as I have seen how time flies and how age changes us.  Each moment is a gift, and getting to preserve these moments in portraits is such a huge responsibility.

Photography has taught me so much and allows me to photograph my own children in the most amazing ways that I never dreamed would be possible. It has made me see sunlight in a beautiful, magical way.

It’s allowed me to dream about possibilities for my families’ future.  Finding photography has truly made me, ME.

Is there anything you want readers to know about you or your business?

I just signed a lease on my first retail studio space and will be moving in during the next few weeks. I have been working in my home studio since I opened in 2012, but with the growth of my business we realized it was time to move to an actual studio space.

I am soooooo excited about this next phase for my business and can’t wait to show the world my new space soon!

Carl IV Maternity Session

Any chance I am able to photograph, I am thankful and grateful to be given the opportunity. This time my "practice" was for a good cause, my cousin-in-law's maternity session.

During the session, she told me that they are decorating the babies room in Mario Bros., decorations so I thought it would be perfect to do the Mario Bros., hat instead of the Princess crown we've been seeing all over Pinterest and I have to say that it worked out perfectly.

Amanda and Carl, I can't wait to meet your baby boy!

The Perfect Weekender

Depending on where you live Spring Break is around the corner [in my neck of the woods it is next week] and Summer is a few short months away.

So to honor, honorary "Travel Season" as I shall dub it.  I decided it would be a great idea to talk with you guys about the perfect weekender bag.  And while I can direct you to blogs who are almost professional packers, I myself can't help you.  I pack my entire life for a weekend trip and when I say weekend I mean a Saturday night Sunday morning kinda trip.  It's pathetic I know.  I

If you want to know how to pack check out hejdoll.

The ultimate way to pack lighter is to not travel with a huge back that can possibly fit your entire life into it.  So the Perfect Weekender bag is literally the Perfect way to go.

I found you guys some budget friendly dupes to go along with the higher priced item. So if one of the bags doesn't fit your budget hopefully the dupe will.

And as always I  urge you on that girl's weekend, stay-cation, or a mini vacation with your better half, I present to you The Perfect Weekender!  Let me know which one is your favorite.  Click on the bags to buy!
